| Working experience and occupation | Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi bin Abu Hassan is a senior consultant physician and gastroenterologist, and former Director-General of Health Malaysia, a role he held until retiring from public service in May 2025. He began his medical career in 1991 after earning the Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians (Dublin), later obtaining his MRCP (UK) 1997 and Master of Medicine from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 1998. He completed subspecialty training in gastroenterology and hepatology through the Ministry of Health, USM, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia. He served in major hospitals including Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Kota Bharu, and Hospital Kuala Terengganu, before being posted to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in 2001. There, he led the Medical Department (2005-2017) and headed the Clinical Research Centre Kedah. Nationally, Dr Radzi was Head of Service for Gastroenterology and Hepatology (2013-2020), Internal Medicine (2021-2022), and later served as Deputy Director-General of Health (Research and Technical Support) before becoming Director-General of Health. He played a key role in developing national clinical guidelines, particularly for hepatitis C and colorectal cancer screening. He has authored over 100 scientific publications, mainly in viral hepatitis, metabolic syndromes, and colorectal cancer. He is also dedicated to advancing the green and planetary health agenda in Ministry of Health. His outstanding leadership in advancing green accreditation for healthcare facilities earned him the Sustainability Leadership Award at the 2025 Green Healthcare Facilities Conference. |
